It is going to be small---I think it'll feel very cozy like a den. How small it seems to you is going to depend on how big your family is, and the scale of furniture you choose for the room will be important. Also, maybe you could have a higher than average ceiling height to give it a more spacious feeling.

That is about the size of a bedroom, just slightly bigger. I wouldn't be happy with a tv room/family room that size. Plus, a narrow room like that is really hard to arrange furniture. If you go to a site like Better Homes and Gardens, they have a feature called arrange a room. You can put in your room dimensions and add furniture to that room. I would give something like that a try, put in the furniture you think you will want and see how it fits. For me, I would not like a room like that under about 15x18 or so. I would personally like seating room for at least 10-12 people in a room like that and there is no way you could have that in a room that size, but that is just me.

I agree. If you plan on entertaining more than just a few people, it would be too small. And this isn't something you can easily fix afterwards.

I too would definately go bigger. Think about your friends and your kids' friends coming over, etc. I say go bigger in the rooms you'll like be in the most.

I"d say too small as well. If you're talking about a single story addtion, the increased cost to push it out a couple of feet in each direction (as long as zoning permits it) would not be that much more and well worth the extra $ in the long run. I would go out to 16 X 20 if you can swing it.
My family room is 12.5 X 21 and it's too narrow. I wished I had been able to push it out to 16 when the house was being built but the foundation was already dug we I found the house.
